About Flotilla 87
Located at Birmingham Alabama, Flotilla 87 is part of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, District 8 Coastal Region, Division 8.
We are a group of volunteers, men and women, ages 17 and up, dedicated "to assist and support the Coast Guard as authorized by the Commandant in performing any Coast Guard function, power, duty, role, mission or operation authorized by law." (Coast Guard Authorization Act of 1996)
Primary Missions:
- Member Services - Nautical education and training including navigation, communications, weather, SAR and much more.
- Recreational Boating Safety - Public education classes, courtesy vessel safety checks, public affairs for safe boating.
- Operations and Marine Safety - On the water patrols and training at local recreational lakes and rivers.
- Fellowship - Want to meet some real characters, who love boating, like good times, and want to provide a service to their community and country?
The basic requirements to become a member of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary are:
- United States citizenship
- Minimum 17 years of age
- No criminal background (minor misdemeanors such as some traffic violations do not apply)
- Interest in boating, aviation, radio communications or any other of the many missions the Coast Guard is charged with prosecuting
- Interest in supporting the aims of the Coast Guard and the Coast Guard Auxiliary
A background fingerprint check and citizenship verification is performed by the Coast Guard of all new members. This is done to conduct a criminal background check and confirm identity before the Coast Guard approves membership.
Individuals who meet the above criteria and are interested in serving their country and the boating public by joining the Coast Guard Auxiliary can contact the nearest flotilla.

Current Projects
- Public Education classes are being planned for 2008.
- Vessel Safety Checks will be planned for 2008 at boat ramps at Smith Lake, Lake Logan Martin, and Lay Lake.
- Plans are being made for Flotilla 87 to host the Division 8 meeting in March of 2008.
